Rhythm and blues (also known by its abbreviations r&b or rnb) is a popular genre of african american music that was first performed in the 1940s. Rhythm and blues combined elements of jazz, gospel and blues music. The term however has seen a number of changes to its meaning. During the 1950s it referred to blues, soul and gospel music, by the 1970s the term was used in reference to funk and soul music. However, by the 1980s and through to the present day r&b often now refers to a newer contemporary form of the genre.
